Actuallly it is not the only criterion used. I have used
since the beginning of what we have done, a set of
traits/characteristics to follow pulled up from old
archives, which includes looking at wing veins, that we
compiled, and then how they break out low to high
altitudes/latitudes, besides time of year FWIW. But it is
strictly keyed to working within a natural field management
system.
