I removed a large, thriving colony out of the hollow empty space
above a large picture window yesterday. The homeowner told me there
had been a honey bee colony on the left side above the window. She
killed that colony with a wasp spray 2 years ago.
The new colony I removed, was on the right side above the same
window. The hollow above the picture window is one hollow. The
window is about 8' wide.
The colony on the right that I removed had lots of stores - in fact,
I collected 12 shopping bags of comb honey (a record for me) - and a
large brood nest with very healthy looking larvae and a very good
brood pattern (although I saw some shriveled wings and varroa).
My question is: is the honey good for human and/or bee consumption?
I know the nectar from this year was not contaminated but could the
wax in the new colony absorb chemicals through travel stains or from
the air and release them into this year's honey?
Thank you.
