A friend of mine has an interesting theory about this.

He is a priest, and very astute observer of my bees.
He states emphatically that the bees must be
celebrating different Saint's Days.

I cannot dispute his theory, as every time I have
noticed a hive displaying this behavior, I have
checked, and sure enough, it WAS a "Saint's Day".

For example, today (July 28th) is Saint Samson's Day,
a feast still celebrated in parts of the UK.

And if anyone needs to take a day off from work,
the calendar looks like an excellent resource for
highly credible excuses.
