Aaron Morris gave a good suggestion about how to control earwigs
(hollow tubes with one end closed).

One can find that and many other suggestions to control pests in
the following publication by Hilary Dole-Klein and myself:

Klein, H.D. and A.M. Wenner. 2001. Tiny Game Hunting:
Environmentally Healthy Ways to Trap and Kill the Pests in Your House
and Garden (new edition). Univ. of California Press: Berkeley.
