Now that its nice and cold its time
to wire brush your blackest combs
(don't do this to a yellow comb,
all that will be left is the wood)
The colder the better, 0 F (-18C)
or it is too 'sticky'
Why would you do this?
I'm glad you asked.
1) Much easier to uncap (next year)
2) Quite 'pretty' 2 tone appearance
3) Removes more than 1/2 chemical contamination
My reasons are 1&2.
Since the bees find it quite hard to
redraw these, only give them 1 unless its
a really strong hive.
For the same reason only do this to B+
or better combs (in all respects)
Typically I only do this to 1/3 possible candidates
As to black combs being 'bad' for
bees I generally do not agree
They are much stronger.
