In a message dated 03-03-29 10:02:32 EST, you write:
<< I am a new aspiring beekeeper and am wondering what method and how to
feed the bees. I have drilled about 20 1/16" inch holes into the top of
a large mason jar but am wondering if I should put it inside the hive or
outside near the entrance. The jar seems like it would be rather tall to
fit inside the hive. >>
Feeding within the hive will reduce the chance of "teaching" the bees to rob.
Take an empty hive body-either a medium if you are using quart jars, or two
mediums/deep for a half gallon/gallon jar. You can put them over the oval
hole in your inner cover, or place the directly on the frames as I and many
others do. I used to use the boardman feeders (entrance feeders) but after
several robbing incidents I put them up and started feeding as I described
above. BTW, you can use a frame nail instead of a drill. Its a tad faster.
Hope this helps
