There was a presentation of this study at our state meeting last year. Old
comb had higher survival, but brand new comb (less than a season old) had
such a much higher laying rate, that it far outstripped the old comb in the
total number of bees raised.
The presenter said no work had been done on the "why" (no doubt, that was
planned for a future grant).

Last spring Dewey Carron spoke a few times at Simon Fraser. In one of his
talks Dr. Caron mentioned that there is a better chance for survival of
brood in older combs than there is in new comb. He did say that it wasn’t
much of a difference but that it could be shown statistically.
