I have always used some 3 deep brood chamber hives, especially for 2-queen colonies, but also for normal colonies. With good queens they often build up
tremendous populations, and as others have written here, swarm much less frequently than 2 deep chamber hives. This year I have put 7 supers on two of them,
and they would probably fill an eighth super as well. However, my scaffold will only reach 7 supers high on top of 3 deep chambers. That is a lot of honey! I
agree with other list posters that the lowest chamber is filled with pollen in fall and winter, and that it is a good resource for starting new splits and nucs the next
spring. The bees usually start out in the middle chamber and move to the top during the winter.
