question:
Did you collect pollen without spliting bee legs? Which matterial you used
for grid? Which matterial won`t hurt bees & won`t change own temperature? You know, on
hot wether grid will become warmer, holes biger? Is hole intersection 6 mm?
Any and all beekeeping activities kill or maim a certain number of bees. Trapping pollen is no exception. Some bee parts may end up in the pollen. It has to be cleaned, therefore. Wire mesh is the accepted material for pollen traps. It is not highly efficient, which means a lot of pollen is allowed into the colony. If this were not true, the colony would perish. If the screen is almost as large as the bottom of the hive (which it is in the OAC trap) ventilation should be adequate.
Does trapping pollen hurt bees? We don't know if bees feel pain. Certainly all beekeeping activities produce some harm to the bees. Many of our practices are greatly beneficial to the honeybee colony. Each person must decide whether one does more good than harm. Some people refuse to eat honey on the grounds that beekeeping is exploitive, just like any other animal husbandry.
