Sad to say, but true.  Most newspapers have a policy of not checking with
interviewees re: accuracy of quotes.  Most magazines, however, DO have fact
checkers--someone other than author of piece.  So you have better luck
there.

When I have been interviewed, I have asked author to READ BACK TO ME,
PLEASE what you just wrote down. This increases (but is not foolproof)* the
likelihood of accuracy of quoting.

*sometimes copy editors will change copy and not realize they are making
something wrong that was right to begin with but perhaps poorly stated.

This ia good reason for practicing good sound bites before being
interviewed. (See the hints that Meta Levin gave in her guest editorial in
June, 1995 in JHL).

Do not expect to get anywhere with reporters on tight deadline for
newspapers when you ask to pre-approve their pieces. It will nto happen.
