The aid agency that donated goat's milk to an infant in Mozambique  
whose mother, a 22-year-old mother of 3, got "breastfeeding problems"  
has replied to my friend's e-mail.
They cannot give any further details about that particular woman, due  
to secrecy and they answer my friend's questions from a general pont  
of wiew.
 From the e-mail, my translation:
"We definitley encourage the mothers to breastfeed and agree with WHO  
in their recommendation (sic) but in those cases where mothers cannot  
breastfeed it mmight be better to give gat's milk than formula partly  
because of the cost for formula but also because of the problem of  
finding pure watre to mix the formula with."

She also asked who gives breast-feeding informations to mothers in  
Mazambique and if there are baby-friendly hospitals- She gets a very  
general exlplanaton about that the government is responsible for  
health care system and that they are helped by NGO's. "Most  
organisations however comply with WHO's recommendations (sic) about 2  
years breastfeeding". They also refer to the woman's right to make  
her own choices "but help her with the different alternatives  to  
available ... [odd word that doesn't exist in Swedish, literally  
*nourishment food*]. formula, another woman's breastmilk or milk from  
a different species, the important thing is that the mother feels  
that it's a state she can manage and that the children survive."

Not even once is the WHO Code mentioned. My friend posted this to a  
Swedish forum, and there are mothers who seem to think bf advocates  
patronize and don't let the mother make her own choice. What are your  
reflections?
