I've worked in I think 6 nicu's and I can say that the promotion and support
of breastfeeding and human milk feeding is usually very poor. Nothing even
close to Rush and the super program they have there. Parents seem to be an
intrusion into the scene and babies are born and are either NPO or started
on formula and no one even asks/talks to mom about bf. Nurses, doctors, and
others are ignorant about the basics.
The take home message that I get from the study is that there needs to be a
huge effort and campaign among all nicu docs, nurses, dieticians, and
administration to urge, encourage, support, and promote IN ALL WAYS
(kangaroo care, no marketing, etc) breastfeeding/human milk feeding for
virtually all the babies.
