For those outside the USA, or outside the maternal-gynecological-neonatal
nursing branches of the nursing profession, I thought it might help to
clarify the actual name of the organization that has recently been
discussed in relation to support or non support of the WHO code. I
believe it is one of the largest organizations for nurses and has members
in the USA, Canada, and the U.S.Armed Forces Nurse Corps all over the
world.

AWHONN is the acronym name for the Association of Women's Health,
Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses. The name was chosen a number of years ago
when the organization felt strong enough to stand on its own. They
rethought their mission, revamped their philosophy in regard to
independence and decided to replace the group's original name, NAACOG.

(This meant Nurses Association of the American College of Obstetrics and
Gynecology. ACOG helped it to get a start. There is of course more to
that story, but we won't go there on Lactnet.)
