There is no data to suggest that premies ingesting the small amount of
colostrum with even smaller amounts of MgSO4 will increase their levels of Mg
or delay effective renal excretion. The amount received through breastmilk,
even assuming FULL breastmilk feeds (which is unlikely in a premie
immediately postpartum while Mom is still on MgSO4) is tiny compared to the
amount received through the placenta in utero. If the Neonatologist has some
data showing a significant increase in Mg levels (or delay in decrease of Mg
levels) I would like the reference. We use Mom's milk while she is on MgSO4
for all infants, including 500 grammers.
