Hi Denise
Has this lady been tested for hyperthyroidism? - this may explain the weight
loss and loss of menses. According to Lawrence's book, TRH (thyrotropin
releasing hormone) increases prolactin levels and TSH (thyroid stimulating
hormone) levels, and thus might present with continuing lactation and
symptoms of hyperthyroidism. TRH is produced by the hypothalamus, and I'm
not sure if it can be produced in increased amounts in isolation from other
hypothalamic hormones. Another possibility is hyperprolactinaemia from a
pituitary source (a much more common medical problem), but this in itself
probably wouldn't explain the weight loss, unless it is secondary to a
reduction in her dietary intake due to worry.
Has anyone else got any suggestions?
