One of my old friends is a blind mother who nursed all five of her children.
I don't know how to reach her right now, but from what I remember, I would
suggest holding the baby in the cradle hold, well-supported by pillows,
holding the breast in the opposite hand in the C-hold with the index finger
extended just past the nipple. Use the index finger to assess whether
babe's mouth is open wide and to direct the breast into the center of the
mouth, sliding index finger back as you feel the wet mouth. Once baby is
latched, use finger to gently pull lips on each side to ensure the lips are
flanged. Then make sure baby is aligned, hips are pulled in to mother. I
saw Donna nurse her babies many, many times and very, very soon, the baby
learns to latch himself on as soon as he's in the right position and mama
presents the breast. I definitely think breastfeeding is so much easier for
a blind mother than bottlefeeding!
