Hi All,
I have permission to post from this mom. Baby is now 7 wks old,
gaining well, oral cavity WNL, but mom's left nipple keeps giving her
problems. It has since she left the hospital. She keeps having recurrent
plugged milk ducts/nipple blebs/clear blebs and it also looks like she has
a sebacious cyst (kind of orangy tint) on it. Baby shapes this nipple
like lip stick. We have tried other positions, shield(tho not ideal for
emptying ducts), cotton ball soaked in olive oil, warm compresses, warm
water soaks, lecithin 1200 mg TID, pumping only , lacerating and then
feeding ... Mom got mastitis on that side before we ever tried popping
the blisters, has been doing nipple care with polysporin since popped, tho
sebacious cyst did not pop. Currently still on round of abx. for
mastitis. Had mom pumping this side and feeding baby from opposite side.
It continues to decrease its supply. Only getting 1/2 oz. out of affected
side. They get better for a couple of days, then come back. Doesnt seem
to matter if she is pumping only on that side, or trying to breastfeed.
It sounds to me that this side is giving up. (or maybe its me that
is giving up! ) She wants to try to increase the production in this
breast and is going to try: continue with olive oil soaked cotton ball,
warm water soak and massage prior to bfg, breastfeed on affected side
first, switch to unaffected side when he is no longer content or sucking
on first side, pump afterward, and pump that side in between fdgs.
     WHAT AM I MISSING?
If I could draw you a mental picture: the nipple everts well, is
very pliable, has 2 pinpoint white blebs at 1200 on face of nipple, a 3mm
orangy-white what I presume to be a sebacious cyst right below that, and a
clear pinpoint blister beneath that. Mom has a high pain threshold and
has nursed on that side thru all this plus when it had cracks/bleeding etc.
When popped, nothing really came out. No stringy material. (clr fluid
out of clr blister, scant white fld and blood out of white blebs)
I get a phone call from her probably every other day with a "new"
thing and just keep scratching my head on this one. Any help would be
greatly appreciated!
