We are powerless over other people's decisions, and we must always remember
to respect their right to make them. People learn all the lessons they need
to learn.  Burnout is the consequence of being overly invested in having
things turn out the way YOU want them to.  All WE have to do is be excellent
practitioners in order to maximize our potential to be useful.  We have to
read the literature to stay current, try to be evidence based,  try to be
ethical, try to be truthful, compassionate and gentle with our patients and
clients, and try to not have our egos involved in issues related to "success
or failure" when we are supposed to be helping others.  Focusing on my part
is plenty enough to keep my mind occupied.  Like a good latch, we just need
to be "effective".  Detatchment doesn't mean you don't care; but it is a
spiritual practice, if you will, that protects others from being the
recipient of our emotional baggage at a time when they are dealing with
plenty of emotions of their own.
