A long time ago, women were told that if they weren't willing to have
sex with a man whenever he pleased, they should not marry.
Not too long ago, they were told not to have sex if they didn't want to
get married.
They were told to abstain from sex if they didn't want to get pregnant,
which wouldn't have been quite so bad if their husbands were told to
listen to them when they said no.
We all make sacrifices. For some of us, marriage, raising children or
any one of many other things is not seen as a sacrifice at all, or is
not a big deal. For many others, it is a difficult road. There are women
who become pregnant without planning it, women whose partners leave
them, women whose partners are abusive, women whose partners control
their finances, lots of women who are poor and lots of women who become
deeply depressed during pregnancy or early motherhood...
All mothers need complete and correct information and sensitive support.
They need to find out what their options are -- including those creative
ways of being able to afford to stay home -- and the emotional support
and empowerment they need to make real choices, not just choices from a
narrow field of "shoulds" based on a partial understanding of their
situations.

Jo-Anne, who has made more sacrifices than some but fewer than many.
