Dear Lactnetters:
I am fairly new to Lactnet, I've only lurked up until now. I am an LLL
Leader and mother of four, soon to be five in October.
I received a call yesterday from a woman seeking information about Oxytocin
Nasal Spray. She has a 10 month baby girl who is nursing about six times
daily. In recent weeks she has noticed her let-down reflex is extremely
slow to occur or absent completely. Her daughter is totally frustrated at
her attempts to nurse until the let-down occurs, she says she cannot hear
any frequent swallowing until she feels the let-down (if at all). She
called me wanting information about how to obtain the spray and whether it
is safe. I gave her the information I had on it's safety during
breastfeeding and told her she needed to contact her physician for a
prescription for the product and that he or she would have to give her
medical advice concerning whether or not she should use it. I am curious. I
couldn't find a whole lot of information on this situation or the spray. Is
it still on the market? Is it effective for mothers in this situation, or
for that matter new mothers? Does anyone out there have experience with
mothers whose let-down disappears at this point? We talked about other
things going on in her life. She says she is fairly stressed out, they just
moved to town. She also says she's tried relaxation techniques, nursing
lying down, nipple stimulation, with no results. She says she is fairly
sure she is not pregnant. She knew someone who used the spray and is
convinced this is the answer. I would appreciate any information or
suggestions any of you may have. Thanks ahead of time.
