One of the items that I am doing to make our office more BF friendly is to
revise a handout titled, " Food for baby's first year." Right now it so
outdated that it suggests evaporated milk formula and wean from breast at one
year. Then it goes on to suggest what foods to introduce at each month
starting at 4 months. Here is my dilemma. Dr. Newman's article,
"Introduction of solids," says introduce what you want, etc., etc., and he
sees nothing wrong with starting solids at 4 months. On the other hand, I
was given in my CLE course very rigid hypoallergenic diet for allergic
children. In addition, if a child is given solids before 6 months, doesn't
it interfere with the full long-term benefits of breastfeeding; certainly it
interferes with the breastmilk's ability to fight illness. Right? And given
that we are suggesting what to introduce and when, shouldn't we suggest it in
the most hypoallergenic way? And as long as the baby is growing and is
satisfied with breastmilk, shouldn't we encourage exclusive BF until 6
months? What do you think?
