Susan Chase wants non-formula co. data on duration. I suggest going to the
Final Report: WIC Infant Feeding Practices STudy, Baydar,N. McCann, M. et
al. Prepared by Battelle Centers for Public Health, 4000 NE 41st St. PO Box
5395, Seattle WA, 98105-0395. Contract No. 53-3198-3-003. 1997.

I down-loaded the report off the internet. It's a USDA sponsored study of
Bfg. in WIC. One of it's purposes was to "identify attitudes and practices
of WIC participants associated with the initiation and continuation of bfg."
They conclude that slightly over one-half of WIC mothers initiate bfg, tho
there are signifcant diff in initiation rates between subgroups based on
ethnicity, age, marital status. All these groups have data which is broken
down. 25% of WIC mothers who intiate bfg. stop by the end of the second
week, and one-half stop by the end of the second month. Perceived
insufficient milk supply is major reason to d/c, and seems to be connected
with not enough daily feeds in the early weeks of bfg. to stim. good supply.
A significant factor in better outcomes was more support from the doctor.
From our experience in Tx, contact with peer counselors may increase
duration, tho I have not seen figures.
