Hi Michele

We just had a discussion about this at our WIC Breastfeeding Coordinators
Meeting on Friday. We were provided with a copy of an article from Clinical
Lactation 2012, vol 3-3 "Marijuana Use and Breastfeeding" by Carrie W.
Miller, MSN, RN, CNE, IBCLC, RLC

In the article it states that the main adverse effects on breastfeeding
infants are increased tremor, poor sucking reflex, decreased feeding time,
slow weight gain, changes in visual response and delayed motor development.

At the meeting it was discussed that Hawaii may be one of the next states
to legalize marijuana so we need to know how to discuss this with our
clients if it is brought up. However, no "standard message" was discussed.
Thinking a message that includes the risk of smoking while breastfeeding,
similar to risks of smoking during pregnancy, risks of formula feeding etc.

Basically - The state office told us if we thought mother's use of
marijuana was causing weight gain issues that we should call the Doctor and
if we thought it was an issue of negligence we should contact CPS.

Now if only the moms would admit to using! Maybe this will change if a
state law is passed here.....

Aloha,
Sally Greene, MS, IBCLC, RLC
