Ref: Pediatrics, 81(4), 505-511. April 1988. Jaundice in the Healthy
Newborn Infant: A New Approach to an Old Problem by M. J. Maisels, K.
Gifford, C.Antie & G.R.Leib

Study was of 2,416 consecutive infants.

Ref: Seminars in Liver Disease, 8(2), 148-162. 1988. Neonatal Jaundice by
M. J. Maisels.
Table 5 lists male sex of infant as one of 12 infant variables that
contribute to increased bili.
They are in order: Low birthweight, Prematurity, Male Sex, Infection,
Breast-feeding, Increased weight loss after birth, Caloric deprivation,
Decreased fluid intake, Delayed meconium passage, Delayed cord clamping, Low
serum zinc and magnesium, Increased cord blood bilirubin level.

Hmmm, now let me see - how many of these factors would be alleviated by
keeping mother and baby together and supporting good BF practices......:-)
