Initially, the idea of a Latch Clinic may sound ideal, but I can see
some real potential problems. Our department head saw the support
group as being this kind of a setting before it was initiated. A
problem right off the bat is that you need to be documenting what
you do/suggest with each mom/baby you see. This can be a real
challenge with several at once. It can turn out to be like doing
several simultaneous consultations! We would try to make a
distinction when telling moms about the services offered at the
hospital. Group is for mutual support and discussion and maybe a
"quick peek" at how baby is latching. More involved situations
warrant an outpatient consult rather than the group so the mom and
baby can be given the time and attention they really need. Also,
for privacy protection, a mom would need to know ahead of time that
she wouldn't getting a consult behind closed doors, but in the midst
of a group of other moms. Some would be comfortable with this and
others wouldn't. Still, some moms would come to the group needing a
lot of time and help. That meant either she had to wait or the rest
of the group was neglected! It did help to have 2 LCs at the group
meetings so one could guide the discussion while the other would
help individual moms. Also, moms would ask why pay for a consult
when they can get the help for free at group.
So, if you are seriously considering a "Latch Clinic" be sure to
look at all the ramifications and pitfalls as well as positives
before you take the plunge.

Winnie
