The complete lack of understanding of basic statistics in cases like this
amazes me. It seems most peds want every child to be above the 50th
percentile. Well, if they were, guess what? 50th wouldn't be 50th
anymore, it would be zero, and then what - shoot for the new 50th?

Somebody's got to be below the 3rd percentile - 3% of people, to be
precise. This child sounds fine, and mom should insist on a second
opinion. The bf has nothing to do with this - if she were drinking milk,
or sucking a pacifier (talk about empty calories, right?) would anyone be
complaining?

Relevant personal story - I was a large baby (9lbs11oz) as were all of my
siblings, and we are all large scandanavian-build adults. So I was not
surprised to have my own babies be relatively large (around 85-90
percentile at birth). However, they steadily dropped on the growth curves
until 18 mos, my son was about 5-10th %ile, daughter stayed up around
25th. Alarming drop off the curve, right? Well, my husband is a very
petite man, was a less-than 6lb baby, and hasn't weighed more than 150# his
entire life. So the kids were just adjusting after being born bigger than
they were destined to be. Thank goodness dad came along to most
appointments so the docs could see where the kids get it from.

I hope this mom gets some relief from the hassling of this doc! Poor thing.
