The top story in today's USA Weekend (newsmagazine that accompanies newspaper, like Parade) is "Our Annual Report: Baby Steps. 15 important findings parents must know right now. Important lessons from the latest research" http://www.usaweekend.com/07_issues/070311/070311babies.html
"1) Pop in a pacifier" "....might reduce incidence of SIDS"...."none of the potential downsides of using a pacifier are life-threatening"..."use after the first month when nursing has been well-established"..."only when he is going to sleep"...

"2) Consider breastfeeding" bf "longer than 3 months may ***protect against bed-wetting during childhood***..." That's the only reason they give!!!!...."...this is another piece of information for parents to look at when they're trying to decide whether or not to breastfeed" gggrrrrrrr...

"4) Be conscious of flouride consumption" "...because parents often use bottled water to make Baby's formula..." [vicki here:not in this part of GA they don't!! it's funky water from the restroom tap...] "....ADA suggests that concerned parents who use powdered infant formula avoid mixing it with water that contains flouride....."

"5) Cuddle up. Getting Baby to sleep through the night is a common challenge for parents.....researchers looked at three groups...how much time they spent holding their child and whether or not they slept with Baby. Whether or not parents slept with Baby didn't seem to affect her sleep, but she did benefit from lots of physical contact."

"10) Quit smoking so that Baby can sleep soundly".... okaaaay. yes, it's all about getting that baby to sleep at night... yep.

"13) Take a nap. New parents rarely get enough sleep....researchers gave 15 new mothers sleep education and support while another 15 didn't get any training" [well at least they're training the parents and not the babies!!] "....put Baby down when she is drowsy. It helps her learn to settle down and fall asleep on her own." [OH there it is!!]

"14) Watch what (and how much) Baby drinks." (about water intoxication). "...Children's Hospital of Philadelphia recommends that infants under 6 months get only breast milk or formula, not water. Infants ages 6 months to 1 year should get only formula or breast milk, 4 to 6 ounces of juice and up to 8 ounces of water each day." [whoops, Lachlan's been missing out on all that great juice and water!]
