I'm working with a mom who had a premie (36 wks) and now has low milk
supply at 6 weeks. There are confounding issues of delayed lactogenesis
(severe edema) and formula supplementation, but I am concerned that a
supply that started at 5oz/ pumping session has dwindled to 1-2oz. Mom
commented to me that she has minimal nipple sensation, and always has.
No history of any breast surgeries or traumas. She says that she has
never had any sexual stimulation from her nipples, and that she does not
feel very much when baby suckles. I asked her if she could feel a
pinch-- she pinched her nipple and told me that she could feel it some,
but that it did not hurt.

Has anyone ever seen or heard this? We are using extra breastfeeds and
herbal galactogogues to try and bring her supply back up, but I am
wondering if this may be another contributing factor to her problem. Any
suggestions or ideas on pursuing this if the situation does not turn
around as expected?
