Sarah,

Glad to be crossing paths with you again. The doctors in Israel may
not be excited about this information, but one of the best talks that I had
heard was Paula Meier discussing her procedure with premature infants at RUSH
University Hospital in Chicago, IL. She had parents measure their
crematocrit readings (when the breastmilk became fattier). Parents were
actually more effective at this than the nurses!-- She studied that also.
Anyhow, once they figured out when Breastmilk became fattier, they had mom
pump off the beginning milk that was thinner, and then feed the baby the
fattier part of the milk. It is my understanding that most of her premies
did not require human milk fortifiers. They pumped off (and saved!) thinner
milk for a two week period, and then after that went back to providing
complete feeds. Interestingly enough, this created a growth rate that
perpetuated despite the fact that the thinner milk was not being pumped ahead
of time. Babies in the program gained weight well, and it might be a good
option for her.
