My client was diagnosed with Bilharzia (schistosomiasis) during pregnancy
and her doctor wanted to wait until after the baby was born before treating
her.  The baby is now 3 weeks old and the mom's treatment now seems fairly
urgent because she is passing what she describes as "a lot" of blood in her
urine.  She has been prescribed a single large dose of Biltricide
(praziquantel) and her doctor wants her to suspend breastfeeding for four
days.  I have "Drugs & Breastfeeding", Ron Batagol, July 1990 which says
"Not contra-indicated", and the WHO/UNICEF "Breastfeeding and Maternal
Medication: Recommendations for Drugs in the Essential Drug List, 1995 which
says, p 7  "Compatible with breastfeeding". This question comes up about
three times per year. I wonder if anyone has anything more detailed I can
share with the GPs who prescribe this medication and who are concerned about
the effects on the breastfed baby.  Thanks if you can help.
