I'm posting this at the request of a colleague who is not on lactnet...

My name is Hilary Flower and I am writing an article for a national online
magazine about nursing in public (sparked by a personal incident: I was told
I could not breastfeed my baby at our local pool a couple weeks ago, because
it is not "family friendly." I am dealing with that through the system, but
I want to do some advocacy at a national level as well.).

I will discuss incidents like my own, and the various Starbucks debacles,
but I want to explore the *cultural* angle, too.

I am collecting examples from the media of how our culture represents the
breast (either in terms of breastfeeding, or as sexual object), with the
intent to show how this aspect of our culture affects nursing in public (and
therefore breastfeeding rates in general). I am exploring many different
aspects of this issue (eg., how formula ads portray breastfeeding;
controversy about breastfeeding imagery in the mass media; the irony of how
acceptable it is for billboards to show lots of skin; etc etc).

I am also interested in such related items as a story I recently read about
(alas, the link is now broken) about an invention that fits on a public
toilet seat to better allow women to nurse in public restrooms without
falling into the toilet. Eegads. So *anything* "pop culture" to do with
nursing in public is also very helpful.

Do you have any examples you would enjoy sharing? I am particularly
interested in examples that include a link, either media reporting about
incidents or images themselves.

Thank you! And when the piece gets published I promise to come back with
the link to my article. Please email me: hflower "at" tampabay "dot" rr
"dot" com Thank you so much for considering this project.
