<< Do any of you have any knowledge as to whether a really strict vegetarian

insufficient milk? I don't have many details but we saw a woman for a PP
visit (6 days old) who is a really strict vegetarian, who has very little
breastmilk (she was only able to pump 7 cc.) and the baby has already lost 2
pounds!! She had the good sense to contact another lactation specialist and
then decided to come in and see one of my colleagues for another visit.

We're working it out with her (using an SNS) but these are tough people to

Betsy,
Im wondering who you mean when you say " these people are tough to
work with".... And as far as 'strict vegetarian' that can have many meanings.
There are vegans who eat no meat or dairy, and have very healthy diets, (
watching out for B12 issues), and there are people whose diets are so limited
that they are simply not eating enough calories. If she grew a healthy baby
in pregnancy, then the addtion of an extra acceptable snack or two should get
her calories in line for lactation, no? People can be unhealthy, or have low
milk supply on any diet style I have found.
Judy LeVan Fram, Brooklyn, NY, whose breastfed baby of her vegan mom gained 3
pounds in the first month post-partum...
