If moms can breastfeed right after C section, they can breastfeed right after any given surgery, Gallbladder operations often are laparoscopies and don't take very long (if no complications arise during surgery). Mom can breastfeed with help as soon as she regain conscienceness enough to know who and where she is. She will need help, for her safety and her baby's, and positioning will need to be carefully planned, for her stomach just under her breasts will be painful. Moving around will be difficult in the first days, so a caring adult around for assistance would be a good idea. If she'll be ''not allowed'' to breastfeed, nursing staff will have to assist her with frequent pumping in order to avoid fullness and fever and to maintain milk production. This probably means more work for staff than having a caring adult in to assist with breastfeeding.

Warmly,

Gonneke, IBCLC, LLLL and recovered gallbladder patient in southern Netherlands

I have a mom waiting to get her gall bladder out as soon as she delivers her
baby. What breastfeeding things should she know? We are afraid that they
will tell her no breastfeeding for many, many hours afterwards. Any insight
would be appreciated.
