Hi All,

I just finished scanning the archives for this...I didn't find any
reference

Two weeks ago I saw a first time breastfeeding mom. She was taking a with
vitamin 5000iu
beta carotene, her baby was latched fine, I left her happy and she called
the next morning her baby 'forgot 'how to latch, I saw her the baby was
three days and orange. She ended up finger feeding for 48 hours as her milk
turned from bright orange to white the baby then latched and continued from
there. No interruption of latch or breast from then on. I thought at first
it was the engorgement. maybe the baby got confused by the drastic change in
the shape of the breast. But as I talked to some of the girls at work they
said maybe it was the taste of the milk with all that beta carotene.

I just got back from seeing a new baby first time mom, all was well
yesterday at the office when she latched. She went home and took two
vitamins containing 5000iu beta carotene..baby wouldn't latch. I went to the
house got the baby on. Tried to re-latch, slight problem, then latched. Left
the mom with positioning advise, and latching(I thought) stop taking the
5000 iu beta carotene
vitamin, baby was orange and two days old. The baby wouldn't latch after I
left, for the next two feeds. The mom has larger breasts so the engorgement
is limited to lumpy breasts. I went back with a pump and taught finger
feeding and advised to try to latch every feed. She has plenty of milk.

So it appears that the baby 'forgets"how to latch. But I think it is the
taste. The taste? Anyone ever heard of this?

I did see how Hale quotes >5000 iu beta carotene is dangerous...'96
reference. I had no idea, but the baby refusing to latch and"forgetting"
really gets me. I swear the babies have so many protectant, built-in,
miraculous mechanisms, it's awesome.
