Why I Got Into the Business

by a Mom Who Had Her Kids in the 1990s

(or should be titled, Why Someday I Hope to Actually Have a Career in
This Business Rather Than Only Volunteering)

Since 1994, I have been in the process of learning to be a (direct
entry) midwife. The first detour was the birth of my daughter, in
1995, but the biggest detour was by increasing interest in
breastfeeding. I did a lot of research on lactation for midwifery
school-related projects, and found in my clinical work that the
midwife I was working with was way out of date in her breastfeeding
info. I started volunteering for Nursing Mother's Counsel of Oregon
and working with our homebirth clients on their breastfeeding issues
(mostly very mild, to be sure). Later detours include the birth of
my second child in 1998, and my almost-full-time return to a liberal
arts college to get my bachelor's degree. Next may be naturopathic
school or something like that, but I will continue to volunteer with
Nursing Mother's Counsel and teach independent birth ed classes for
those interested in natural childbirth, as I traverse this path. My
special interest is still working with homebirthers, and nursing my
own children, now 5.5 yrs and 2.5 yrs.

Katherine
