I would suggest to the teacher who requested teaching aids/info on
breastfeeding for 8th graders to use lots and lots of slides/photos of women
nursing their babies where you can actually see the breast with the baby
attached (i.e. not the discrete kind where it looks like the baby is just up
under the mother's shirt). Pictures are worht a thousand words, and lots
and lots of pictures of mothers and babies nursing will go a LONG way toward
getting the message across that breasts are for feeding babies. I think the
sexual nature of breasts promoted in our culture will be foremost on these
students minds, and if the teacher just keeps showing picture after picture
of normal breastfeeding, it will de-mystify and de-sensitize these students.
Another option, especially good for this purpose, would be the Righard video
on "Delivery-Self-Attachment" because it shows some very lovely breasts, on
a very lovely woman, completely out in the open for all to see, and shows
the baby latching on. The context is clearly one of "breasts are lovely,
see how they work to feed babies" and the latched-on babies are very
contented looking. The video is quite short (5 minutes). IMHO, before the
students are going to be open to hearing about the health and other benefits
of breastfeeding, the teacher must get over the snickers/giggles stage of
talking about breasts.
