Hello all,
I have some questions about nipple piercing. Many sources say that it does
not appear to affect maternal milk supply. However, some say it can cause
issues. I just read an article in JAMA from June, 2009, on nipple piercing
associated with abnormal milk supply. It seems to me that if a nerve was
severed, then it could cause problems with the milk supply being sustained,
right? So my questions are:

Does it matter where the piercing was? (like for example, would up and
down, or side to side, would one of those be a higher risk than the other?)

If milk is pouring out of the holes, could that indicate that possibly ducts
were compromised in the piercing?

If someone has both nipples pierced, how do you know if this is impacting
the supply or not, especially when there are other layers or issues going
on?

Thanks for your time,

Sonya Shaver, BS, CHES, IBCLC
