Jennifer, you recommended the right type of pump. There is often MORE profit
from selling the Pump in Style than in renting the Lactina. This is a one
shot sale vs. the headache of rentals when the second month rental fee is
due or trying to get the pump returned.

Both major manufacturers (Ameda and Medela) recommend rental or hospital
grade breast pumps to establish a milk supply. The difference is supposedly
in the rate of cycling and the long term durability of the motor. Mom can
check the Medela and Ameda web sites and see for herself. Even the PIS user
guide says this pump is not meant to establish a milk supply. When moms
won't believe me (and I don't rent or sell pumps), I tell them to look for
themselves and read it from the manufacturer. Besides that, in case mom is
not successful at breastfeeding a rental makes more sense. She won't end up
owning and selling or loaning out a pump she "hardly used."

IBCLCs see lots of women who do much better once they get off the PIS and go
to a rental. I have seen women double their supply from first using a PIS
then going to a rental.

I have heard others say the PIS is the same motor as the Lactina. Maybe this
is true -- but what are the ethical considerations for recommending
equiptment be used in ways that go against the manufacturer's stated intent
or guidelines?

In the case of a mom with large nipples, she should probably get the larger
breast flanges. Medela's flanges have smaller "tunnels" than Ameda's and
some women will not respond well if the areola isn't stimulated enough (from
the flange tunnel hole being too small).
