I just have to add an additional "chapter" to my story about the doc who told
the mother (last week) that while breastmilk was an A+, formula was an A.

Well, this evening I walked into the nursery in time to hear this same doc tell a
mother of a 36 weeker, who by the way breastfeeds well (on an apnea
monitor for one spell, plus failing a car seat test twice) that the baby
was "too weak to be able to get enough out of the breast" and that giving the
supplemental breastmilk by bottle (instead of finger feeding) was preferable.

When I asked that we do a test weight on the next breastfeeding (which we
did), it showed a nice transfer of one ounce. I was so happy to see that.
When the other nurse mentioned this to the doc, the doc's response
was "that will reassure Mom." That made me laugh because in reality we did
the test weight to reassure the doc. The mother is an experienced nurser and
will do fine........................thank goodness.

Anyone have a good recent article on the fact that O2 sats ,heart rates and
respiratory rates remain higher with breastfeeding than with bottlefeeding? I
have some stuff but before I pull my information out, I am just going to see
what I can do by approaching her one on one.

Now that I have that off my chest, maybe I can relax!

This is a fine example of why we need competent IBCLC's in hospitals!!
