 My oldest is now 50.  The thing I remember was that we were told "one minute each side the first day, 3 the second, 5 the third" etc.  I asked "Is that minutes at the breast or minutes of actual sucking?"  I never really got an answer, so I figured it made the most sense to count minutes of sucking.  got so frustrated trying to count the time that way that I finally gave up that approach and pretty much let the baby decide.  I was just too "lazy" to bother with the timing business.  Winnie Mading
