This question comes to mind often as I talk with WIC nursing mothers on
the phone. I have found Dianne Wiessinger's sheets to be of great help,
particularly the one called "What a Baby Expects in Life". And often as
not, I find that it is the mother's support persons who are "threatening"
to her status as a "good mother" by criticizing her for "spoiling the
baby".

She places the baby's needs in a context of inborn needs that promoted
the baby's survival from animal predators since prehistoric times, and
she ties it in nicely with observing the baby to find the clues to his
needs, and reassures parents by presenting simple ways to meet them.

She sells the masters at a very reasonable price. As long as you leave
her name and address on the sheet, you are free to copy as many as you
like. I can't say for sure how many mothers'/families' expectations are
changed, but it sure makes me feel better to have this to send out when I
encounter such a mom!

My disclaimer: I have no financial connection with her sheets. I am
simply an admirer and an avid supporter. E-mail her privately at
