I am wondering if anyone has experience or a reference regarding the prophylactic use of antibiotics for a woman who has had severe and recurrent mastitis. She is expecting her 3rd child and wants very much to breastfeed this baby. She had a very severe case of mastitis with her first that was resistant to treatment, and the same happened with her second child - although she weaned that baby almost immediately. Her midwife has agreed to try probphylactic antibiotics beginning 4-5 days post delivery. I am wondering if there is any anecdotal evidence or research to support this intervention.
