I conceived my 2nd child (Samantha) when my son was just a bit less
than 3.5 yo. My nipples become very sensitive and a breastfeeding
3yo was a bit too much for me. It was a very low stress weaning.
His most difficult breastfeeding times were during the night. He
could breastfeed till mom counted to 10/20 or so and then just
cuddle. It worked great for us. I think he needed the physical
contact more than the actual breastmilk at that time. He still
comes into bed with us occasionally (he's 9yo) and is quite the
cuddler.

I think he asked to breastfeed a few times after his sister was born.
He seemed to have forgotten how to latch on properly and just giggled
after he put his mouth on my nipple.

Samantha weaned when she was also 3.5yo. Her last breastfeeding
session was right before bed. She would breastfeed for a short time
and then turn over and go to sleep. After awhile she didn't need to
breastfeed, she'd just turn over and go to sleep. She (at 5yo) is
still much less demanding at bedtime than her brother.

It always amazes me that two children from the same parents can be so
different and so similar - I really enjoy my children!
