Dr. Richard Schanler did a study looking at preterm formula vs donor human
milk AS A SUPPLEMENT to mother's own milk. It will be presented first as an
abstract at the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine (ABM) Meeting in Vancouver
November 15-17th in Vancouver. He looked at 3 groups: fortified mother's own
milk (MOM) exclusively, preterm formula (PTF) as a supplement to MOM, and
pasteurized donor human milk (PDHM) as a supplement to MOM. Not surprisingly
he found the MOM group did better than either supplemented group re
infections, and that the PDHM group did not grow as well as the PTF
supplemented group.

This should not be taken as proof that PDHM has no value in the NICU. The
study that needs to be done is comparing fortified MOM, fortified PDHM and
PTF alone re infection and growth. I believe any differences were washed out
by the MOM given to ALL the groups in this study.

The abstract may be found in the last issue of the ABM New's & Views
newsletter (not available on line) but available from the ABM office
(877-836-9947 extension 25; local-New Jersey USA 609-799-6327).
