My son weighed 8#12 at birth. His weight nadir was 7#4 at 4 days. (My milk
didn't come in until day 5.)

I have no explanation for a nearly 20% weight loss. I know the weights were
more or less valid because we checked his birth weight, discharge weight,
and follow up weights several times on different scales (including my own
office scales) and they were all congruent. And he didn't LOOK 20% down
from birth weight -- no jaundice whatsoever, moist mouth, occasional (but
brisk) voids. But I think it was for real.

The physician in me panicked, but luckily my husband didn't. He stayed up
all night and gave him the only 3 oz of formula he ever needed, while he let
exhausted, frazzled me sleep the night through -- and woke up leaking
everywhere.

To the slow gainer discussion, I can only add: go with how the baby is
looking and acting, not the scale weight.
