My explanation to moms on why to use both breasts during a feed is 1) to
help establish and build up the milk supply, 2) to ensure that baby is at
the breast an ample amount of time and 3) to keep mom's breasts 'balanced'
(especially in the first 2 weeks of nursing). I explain that this is not a
requirement, but helps during the first 4 to 6 weeks in establishing the
milk supply and lessening or preventing problems (especially milk supply
problems). After the first 6 weeks, if baby is nursing correctly and well, I
tell moms that it will not hurt baby to nurse from just one breast at a feed
- that as with all breastfeeding issues, she needs to watch baby for cues
and indications that all is going well.

After 2+ months of being gone (computer hardware failure), it is nice to be
up and running again.
