From my experience I have seen combined hormonal contraception (CHC) work to induce lactation. I have had patients who took the birth control pill for contraception, with no thought or intention of inducing, who had spontaneous milk leakage from their breasts upon abruptly stopping the CHC. Usually these have been cases when the CHC strength was high, particularly with the patch.

I find that using CHC with induction is more successful than without for those who have never lactated in the past. However, in some of the older literature on induced lactation, particularly from Papua New Guinea, depo medroxyprogesterone has been used instead of CHC, but only for those who have never lactated. In fact, in the older literature, the term induced lactation is used for women who have never lactated, and relactation is used for women who have lactated in the past, no matter how long ago it was.
