Are we tired of talking about Depo yet? There's a great deal of talk that
it decreases milk supply but I still have not seen any citations for us to
refer to. I've been trying to read old postings to get Miriam Lubbock (sp?)
phone number or e-mail address because it sounds like she has more recent
info and research. I work in an urban setting doing lactation home visits
at a Health Department that has a family planning clinic used by those with
no or Medicaid insurance. Depo is used a lot and also at the High Risk
Clinic in Lansing. Last week I tried sharing the postings by some of you
last week but was blown off basically because they are seemingly just
opinions. I leave this job July 27 and it would be great to have some more
data to leave with them.

Maybe my source is not up to date on the effects of Depo and BF but he said
he's watched it all over the world. My "source" is Andrew Kaunitz, M.D.,
Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the U of Florida Helath
Science Center, (904)549-3215. I will try to contact him. If anyone on the
net is from his area, please try, too.

Also I think Kim's idea about trying the mini pill, if the Mom must use a
hormone method, is a good plan since the Mom can stop the pill and not the
effects of the 3 month shot.

None of this is ever an issue with my private practice patients because
they hardly ever choose hormone methods. Unless someone can empower a woman
in poverty , with all of its accompanying issues for women and families, to
use LAM , I do not see how it could be a trusted method for some of them
even if they are breastfeeding. Pacifiers are used, anything to get more
sleep, bottles of formula or EBM, etc.

Please send your citations so I can share with providers prescribing the
Depo. Cindy
