Hi Everyone,

I need some advice about how to handle a situation that has me steaming.
My supervisor just told me about a meeting at our hospital this morning.
Our director was in attendance and passed the info. on to the supervisor,
so I got it 3rd hand, but I'm certain of it's relaibility.

Our hospital is about to open an employee lactation lounge. It is a small
room with a curtain and 2 breast pumps that will be available for staff
members to use while they are at work. Our director fought long and hard
to get the gods of space allocation to give us the spot. We are very
excited about it and anticipate that it will be a busy place.

Today at a meeting attended by nursing leadership, 2 attendees approached
our director to tell her what a silly idea they thought this room was.
They commented that nurses can use a closet or a bathroom to pump and (I'm
taking a deep breath now..) then said, "Next thing you know, we'll have to
have a room for the guys to go in to masturbate."

Our director fought back with comments about how the hospital will save
money and retain staff, but I don't think they heard a thing.

I'd really like to get some information to these 2. They are leaders in
our hospital and have many employees working under them. I worry that
their attitudes may discourage some of their staff members from taking
advantage of the pumps. The great irony is that our hospital has a
certificate of intent for baby friendly and we're hoping to be ready for a
site visit this year. (Boy I hope the baby friendly people don't run into
them in the cafeteria!!!)

Any suggestions? My initial instinct was to troop down to their offices
and shoot my mouth off, but I'm over that now.

Speedy replies would be greatly appreciated. I'm leaving on Tuesday for a
much needed 3 week vacation in the more enlightened Pacific Northwest.

Thanks to all!

Barb
