Kathy asks: Please someone explain to me how the concentration can be
different if you
put in the powder then the water versus the water then the powder. I can't
figure this one out.

Kathy Dettwyler

If you put a scoop in the bottle and then fill to the 2 oz. mark you will get
a different concentration than if you put in 2 oz. of water and then add the
scoop. In the first case you end up with exactly 2 oz. of formula and in the
second case you will have more than 2 oz. If the directions tell you to add
the water first and then add the scoop of powder, you will get a total volume
of more than 2 oz., which according to the directions, is the right
concentration. In the first case where you add the scoop and then fill to the
2 oz. mark you get a more concentrated formula. Of course if you add the
scoop of powder and then add a premeasured 2 oz. of water that would be the
right concentration. I'm sure this is the least of the mistakes parents
make. I think observing parents mixing formula would be a great study. I
wonder if anyone gets it right.
